Control of Surface Wrinkling through Compliant Nanostructured Interfaces

چکیده

Surface wrinkling occurs due to the mechanical instability induced by stiffness mismatch between a soft substrate and stiff film. In two-layer system comprised of thick compliant thin film, wrinkle pattern, as described wavelength, amplitude, orientation, is limited material properties thickness two layers. this work, an interface layer nanostructures fabricated glancing angle deposition (GLAD) introduced modify surface polydimethylsiloxane Cu thus enabling improved control in otherwise constrained system. Isotropic (nanospring) orthotropic (nanochevron) interfaces are GLAD-deposited with different geometric parameters in-plane interface. The isotropic nanospring films provide novel means physical length scale patterns, namely, both wavelength amplitude wrinkles, while maintaining amplitude-to-wavelength aspect ratio. anisotropic nanochevron result anisotropy ratio ≈10 which provides unique direction independently applied load. prediction experimentally calibrated analytical model shown be good agreement experiment.

Localized ridge wrinkling of stiff films on compliant substrates

Wrinkling of thin stiff films on thick compliant elastomeric substrates subject to plane strain compression is considered for cases in which the substrate is pre-stretched prior to film attachment. Advanced wrinkling modes are investigated that evolve as the systems are compressed beyond the onset of the primary sinusoidal wrinkling mode. If the substrate pre-stretch is greater than about 40%, ...

Nanostructured Interfaces for Thermoelectrics

Temperature drops at the interfaces between thermoelectric materials and the heat source and sink reduce the overall efficiency of thermoelectric systems. Nanostructured interfaces based on vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) promise the combination of mechanical compliance and high thermal conductance required for thermoelectric modules, which are subjected to severe thermomechanical st...

PHYSICAL MATHEMATICS SEMINAR Drag Control through Wrinkling on Curved Surfaces

We present the results of an experimental investigation on the wrinkling of positively curved surfaces and explore their use towards drag reduction applications. In our precision model experiments we make use of rapid prototyping techniques to cast samples with custom geometry and material properties out of silicone-based rubbers. Our structures consist of a thin stiff shell that is chemically ...
